Abstract
Individuals with developmental disabilities often display problem behaviors such as self-injurious behaviors, aggressions, and destructions. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate the Functional Assessment for Challenging/Problem Behaviors (FAPB). In study 1, several interviews with patients, families, and therapists were conducted; the initial pool of items were developed from these interview results as well as existing measures. In study 2, a preliminary analysis was conducted twice and items were reduced to 70. In study 3, an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted which yielded six factors: ¡®demand¡¯, ¡®self-stimulation¡¯, ¡®physical state¡¯, ¡®obsession and control¡¯, ¡®avoidance¡¯ and ¡®attention¡¯. Each factor consisted of 4 items, constructing a total of 24 items. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted and confirmed the six-factor model with good fit indices. Finally, the FAPB showed good internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and convergent validity. Theoretical and clinical implications are discussed.
